肖邦第三钢琴奏鸣曲作于1844年夏（肖邦去世前五年）。这一年5月肖邦的父亲去世，他自己的身体每况愈下，与乔治桑的感情也开始恶化，因此悲凉和痛苦的情感不可避免地被注入这首作品。在Op. 58中，那种悲伤没有像Op. 35那样直言不讳的爆发，没有像李斯特b小调那样撕心裂肺的呐喊，而是像一条隐藏的线索，贯穿、渗透在整部作品中。在悲凉之上，是肖邦自身的精神探索和与灵魂的深刻对话，是对生命的思考和对爱的回忆。这种无声而压抑的"悲"，深远而宏大的主题，赋予了这首大作品厚重的情感色彩和哲学意义，是不可多得的佳作。
